They win and lose at the level of individual interactions without ever understanding the rules of the game those interactions are part of.

They understand that every industry has a meta-game running underneath the explicit competition. Every social environment has a subgame that determines who advances and who doesn't. Every negotiation has stakes that aren't on the table.
Meta-game thinking is the ability to ask: what is the actual game here? Not what it looks like, not what it's supposed to be, but what it actually is. What are people actually competing for? What determines the real winners and losers? What are the rules that nobody says out loud?
